The intervention in Diogo de Gouveia Secondary School in Beja was characterised by the renovation and upgrading of the existing building, extensions adding three new bodies and the remodelling of the school grounds.
In the pre-existing buildings the distribution of the spaces and the respective original functions were maintained. The extended bodies – designed to house specific learning spaces such as the library, ICT rooms, planetarium, multipurpose laboratory and the covered games field – were laid out and dimensioned so as to not overpower the existing parts. Their articulation with the main galleries create the functional and safety conditions for opening the school to the surrounding community in extra and post-curricular periods in the context of the activities involved in after-work training, cultural and social events and sports.
